Most parents today have problems with getting kids to study on their own. Since kids today are more preoccupied with watching TV, playing games on their computer and other gadgets, parents will really have a hard time getting them to stop doing these and start studying.
Once you see that your child has developed some good study habits, the next thing you have to do is to ensure that they continue practicing these and they do not fall back to their bad or lazy ways of studying.
As a parent, it can be a huge task to make sure that your child continues to practice good study habits. But there are some useful tips you can follow to support your child’s after-school learning activities at home. These tips include the following:
Work with your child in making a realistic timetable for studying. To make sure that your child follows through with his or her studying plan at home, guide him or her to come up with a timetable that your kid can easily follow. This timetable should include all your child’s other extracurricular activities such as his or her participation in sports or science clubs. When your child is not busy doing other things after school, he or she should be using this time productively. You can help him or her divide this time so that he can study or review all the subjects he or she is taking up in school.
Allow for some flexibility. Study plans were not designed to create feelings of deprivation and resentment in young kids. Your child does not need to start reviewing immediately at 4:00 in the afternoon and stop at 7:00 in the evening. If your child’s favourite TV show is on, you can let him or her finish watching it and then he or she can continue studying once it’s done. By doing so, your child won’t feel that he or she is forced to study and he or she will also have some time to have fun and enjoy some things in their young life.
Do your best to limit interruptions and distractions. Once you and your child agree on a study plan, make sure you only allow him or her check his or her phone for just 10 minutes, before he or she starts reviewing another subject. You can even keep their gadgets while they are studying and return these to them once they are done for the day.
Give your child 10 minutes per hour to rest and relax a bit. Lastly, most education experts recommend kids to study for 50 minutes and to give them a 10-minute break before they start on a different subject. Kids can use this 10-minute break to eat some snack and drink or get some fresh air out in the garden. This 10-minute break, although short, would be enough to rejuvenate your child.
